Boost for Burnley as JD Sports Joins Other National Retailers to increase space at Charter Walk Shopping Centre

Addington, the asset manager for Charter Walk Shopping Centre in Burnley announces that JD Sports, the FTSE 100-listed sports fashion retailer, is expanding its presence in Burnley with a significant store relocation and expansion in the shopping centre.

JD Sports is signing a 10-year lease for a larger, more prominent unit and will relocate from its current store at 50 The Mall to 30-34 The Mall & 6-10 Fleet Walk, increasing its ground floor trading space from 3,973 sq ft to 5,817 sq ft. The new unit, situated on The Mall opposite River Island and Superdrug, provides an enhanced shopping experience for customers in one of the most popular stores within the scheme.

Landlord works to amalgamate six vacant units for JD Sports’ new store are already underway, with the opening targeted for Summer 2025. Addington, as asset managers for the store’s owners, Burnley Council, is in active discussions with interested parties to re-let its current store.

JD Sports’ recommitment to the shopping centre follows on from a series of other high-profile retailers upsizing in Charter Walk, demonstrating strong confidence in the shopping centre’s future:

  • Shoe Zone has upsized into the neighbouring unit to create a larger corner unit at 57, St James Street & 1-5 Fleet Walk, fronting both streets. It has signed an additional 5-year lease on 3,025 sq ft.
  • Specsavers has also upsized into the neighbouring unit, signing a 10-year lease on 4,999 sq. ft at 25-27 The Mall.
  • Both Shoe Zone and Specsavers have effectively doubled the size of their stores.
  • One Beyond has taken 10,015 sq. ft at the former Wilko unit at 24,The Mall and has now opened for trading.

Matthew Allen Principal of Addington said, “We are delighted that JD Sports, who has been a key part of Burnley’s retail landscape for over 20 years has recommitted to the shopping centre. Occupancy across Charter Walk remains very high. By consolidating smaller units into larger, modern retail spaces, the Centre is securing the long-term presence of national retailers, enhancing the overall sustainability of Charter Walk as a thriving destination for the local community.”
