Charter Walk Shopping Centre comprises of 358,700 sq. ft. of retail accommodation and makes up most of the retail in Burnley town centre. We initially acquired it in partnership with a fund managed by Tristan Capital Partners in 2011. It was subsequently sold to Burnley Borough Council in 2021. We continue to work as asset managers to the Council who are investing in the scheme and strengthening its position as the focal point for the local community.
During the past 14 years, despite the significant headwinds of competition from online retailing and contracting retailer demand, Charter Walk has remained remarkably resilient under the joint custodianship of Addington with Tristan and now in partnership with the Council.
Over the same period, we have redesigned and redeveloped part of the Market Square to provide modern retail accommodation, now occupied by River Island, The Entertainer and Tessuti.
We upsized Next into a 35,500 sq. ft. department store and brought Primark into the town for a new 43,000 sq. ft. store which involved the relocation of Wilko to elsewhere in the centre. More recently we’ve secured lettings to Tessuti and upsized Specsavers, Shoe Zone and JD Sports who are all trading very well in the town.
The centre continues to maintain high levels of occupancy and is set to perform extremely well in the next five years.
